Welcome to Mrs. Garrett’s Second Grade
Class
I’m excited about having your child in my
room this year. This year is going to be
a wonderful year for your child.
Throughout the school year your child will grow and become an
independent learner. I will focus on
respect, responsibility and safety in my classroom. During this year your student will be
expected to follow our classroom rules, learn math facts, and become an
independent reader. Please feel free to
contact me any time during the year if you have any questions or concerns about
your child. My email address is karen.garrett@dekalbisd.net
Voyager Reading Program
In second grade reading we use Voyager’s
Universal Literacy program, Hiding
Places, it takes
second-graders on a yearlong adventure to discover the hidden habitats of our
world and the mysteries of outer space.
The Hiding Places Reading Program first captures the curiosity, and then expands the
reading skill, of every child. The
program focuses on engaging, explicit daily reading skill lessons, experiences
with literature, and a systematic assessment of student reading progress that
informs instruction. The program is
divided into six units. Each unit spans
a six week grading period. Each unit has a different theme that focuses on
habitats through out the world.
