WELCOME TO MRS. BURKETT’S
CLASSROOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is going to be a great year. I’m looking forward to having your child in
my room. Please feel free to visit with
me on the web or in person. I want you
to feel comfortable talking with me about any problem or even when there is no
problem at all. Please look at our
classroom rules and go over them with your child. This will help in keeping everyone happy and
safe. My email address is:

What we’re doing!!
In second grade we use Voyager’s Universal
Literacy program, Hiding Places. It
takes second graders on a yearlong adventure to discover the hidden habitats of
our world and the mysteries of outer space. Through a systematic instructional
framework of teaching, modeling, assessing, and reviewing essential reading
skills and strategies, a new era of reading is achieved.
The program is divided into
six units. Each unit visits a new place.
·
Unit 1 –
Backyards
·
Unit 2 - Deserts
·
Unit3 -
Wetlands
·
Unit 4 - Forests
·
Unit 5 - Mountains
·
Unit 6 - Space
READING HOMEWORK
Each student has a reading log
booklet. Each night, Monday-Thursday,
they are to read at least 15 minutes.
When they finish, each night, they are to fill in a section in their
Reading Log booklet. This needs to be
brought back to class every Friday. They
receive a sticker on a reading chart. They
also receive a 100 in the grade book.
When their chart is full, they receive a SUPER PRIZE!
When they read, they need to be reading with
a fluency speed of at least 90 words per minute by the end of second
grade. I will be giving a fluency test about
every 2 weeks.
They will receive a fluency
grade and a comprehension grade. You
will be sent home a chart showing what score is given for the fluency level
that your child is reading on. PLEASE
practice at home. If your need reading
materials let me know.
ENGLISH
I also teach English/Writing. We work on sentence structure and grammar
daily. They work on a DOL (Daily Oral
Language) paper every day to reinforce the skill that was taught the previous
day. If they need to correct a paper, they will bring it home. This is usually the only homework that they
will have.
